Convention Notes

MyDD will have all 4 of its bloggers at the DNCC convention. I'll be getting in on Sat morn, and not leaving till Friday next, a first-in last-out sorta fun. The DNC added more speakers (below the fold).

For those following along and marking off names as they get named to speak, "On Wednesday, August 27th, new speakers addressing the theme of Securing America's Future include Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed, and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley."

Yes, it is a bit strange to name the night the same as Wes Clark's PAC, and not have him involved in speaking about that issue... but he's not, and there you have it.

It has been announced that Gore is speaking on Thursday. The only ones left, whom are talked about as VP but are not yet named to speak thus far, are Kaine and Dodd, both of whom we know, were vetted. So that's the poll below.

Update [2008-8-19 17:15:27 by Jerome Armstrong]: Kaine is speaking on Thur night, he and Gore are speaking before Obama.

Let the Doddmania begin! Long live the DoddSquad!!

THE 2008 CONVENTION:
AMERICANS COMING TOGETHER FOR CHANGE

Democrats Add New Speakers, Announce Gavel Times
For Opening Three Nights in Denver

DENVER - The Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) and the Obama for America Campaign today announced new speakers and gavel times for the opening three nights of the 2008 Democratic National Convention, to take place August 25th - 28th in Denver.

Joining the program on Monday, August 25th will be Former President Jimmy Carter; Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar; Miami Mayor Manny Diaz; Illinois state leaders Alexi Giannoulis, Dan Hynes, Lisa Madigan, and Tom Balanoff from Illinois SEIU; long-time Barack Obama mentor Jerry Kellman; NEA President Reg Weaver; AFT President Randi Weingarten; and NARAL Pro-Choice America President Nancy Keenan. The theme of Monday's program is One Nation.

New speakers added to the program on Tuesday, August 26th are Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy; West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin, Chair of the Democratic Governors' Association; Iowa Governor Chet Culver; Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle; California State Controller John Chiang; Change to Win's Anna Burger; AFL-CIO President John Sweeney; and Planned Parenthood of America President Cecile Richards. On Wednesday, August 27th, new speakers addressing the theme of Securing America's Future include Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed, and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley.

Organizers stressed that new names were being added daily to the Convention program and that there would be several major announcements on the program yet to come, including the program for the final night of the Convention and the names of the first-time delegates and everyday Americans who will be central to the Convention program.

Also today, Convention organizers announced that the Convention will gavel open at 3:00 PM Mountain/5:00 PM Eastern and gavel down at 9:00 PM Mountain/11:00 PM Eastern, Monday through Wednesday, August 25th -27th.

PROGRAM SUMMARY TO DATE

Monday, August 25 - One Nation.
Barack Obama's story is an American story that reflects a life of struggle, opportunity and responsibility like those faced by Americans everyday. The opening night of the Convention will highlight Barack's life story, his commitment to change, and the voices of Americans who are calling for a new direction for this country.

Monday's headline prime-time speaker will be Michelle Obama.

Other Monday night speakers include:
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi; Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri; Barack Obama's sister Maya Soetero-Ng and Craig Robinson, Michelle Obama's older brother; Jerry Kellman, mentor and long-time friend of Barack Obama;  Representative Jesse Jackson, Jr.;  former Indiana Representative Lee Hamilton; Tom Balanoff, President of Illinois SEIU; Nancy Keenan, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America; NEA President Reg Weaver; AFT President Randi Weingarten;  Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan; State Comptroller Dan Hynes; Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulis; Chicago City Clerk Miguel del Valle; and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper.

Monday night will also feature a tribute to Senator Edward M. Kennedy.

Tuesday, August 26 - Renewing America's Promise.
Millions of Americans are struggling to get by. The failed policies of the last eight years have betrayed the country's values and left an economy out of balance. Barack Obama believes a strong economy is unattainable with a weak middle class. Tuesday's Convention program will feature the voices of Americans who share Barack's concerns and strongly support his detailed economic plan to grow the economy, create jobs, restore fairness, and expand opportunity.

Senator Hillary Clinton will be the headline prime-time speaker and former Virginia Governor Mark Warner will deliver the keynote address on Tuesday night. Pay Equity pioneer Lilly Ledbetter will also address the Convention on Tuesday.

Other Tuesday speakers will include:
Governor Brian Schweitzer of Montana; Governor Deval Patrick of Massachusetts; Governor Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas;  Governor Janet Napolitano of Arizona; Governor Joe Manchin of West Virginia; Governor Jim Doyle of Wisconsin; Governor Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania; Governor Ted Strickland of Ohio; Governor David Paterson of New York; Governor Chet Culver of Iowa; Senator Bob Casey, Jr., of Pennsylvania; Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont; former Secretary of Energy and Transportation Federico Peña;  House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer; House Democratic Caucus Chair Rahm Emanuel; Representative Xavier Becerra (D-CA), Assistant to the Speaker of the House; and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) Chair Chris Van Hollen, who will use his time to showcase his top candidates for change.

Representatives Nydia Velazquez (D-NY), Linda Sanchez (D-CA), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Mike Honda (D-CA), California Controller John Chiang, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards, Change To Win's Anna Burger, and AFL-CIO President John Sweeney will also speak.

Wednesday, August 27 - Securing America's Future.
Barack Obama offers a new, tough foreign policy that is neither Republican nor Democratic, but is a strong, smart American foreign policy to make our country more secure and advance our interests in the world. Wednesday night's Convention program will feature the voices of Americans who share Barack's vision of making America stronger and safer.

The headline prime-time speaker on Wednesday will be Barack Obama's Vice Presidential Nominee.

Featured speakers will include:
Former President Bill Clinton; former Senator Tom Daschle; Governor Bill Richardson and Senators Evan Bayh, Joe Biden, John Kerry and Jay Rockefeller. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Convention home state Senator Ken Salazar, House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn, and Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL) along with Chicago Mayor Richard Daley. Representative Patrick Murphy (D-PA) and Iraq War veteran Tammy Duckworth will lead a tribute honoring those who give so much to secure our nation's future - veterans, active duty military and their families.

Thursday, August 28 - Change You Can Believe In.
On Thursday night, the DNCC will throw open the doors of the Convention and move to INVESCO Field at Mile High so that more Americans can be a part of the fourth night of the Convention as Barack Obama accepts the Democratic nomination.  Obama will communicate the urgency of the moment, highlight the struggles Americans are facing and call on Americans to come together to change the course of our nation.  Additional details of the program to precede Barack Obama's acceptance speech will be announced later this week.

Can I choose neither?  I like Kaine, but I don't think he's the right fit for Obama.  Another year, another candidate, maybe.  I just don't like the fit for what Obama needs.

As for Dodd, I think he's been a great Senator.  VP?  eh.

I really hope that it's not down to Kaine and Dodd.  I really hope, and yet ... it does seem quite possible.  I much prefer Joe Biden, and I know I'll be blasted by some for this, but I much prefer Evan Bayh as well.  Heck, I prefer Bill Richardson, and I'm not gung ho on that.

Re: Convention Notes (none / 0)

I really wonder what is going on with Wes?

Do they have ANY OTHER military men speaking on the schedule?

I see Reed, Kerry, Duckworth.

No brass? No Zinni, no Jones? am I missing something here (many would say,YES!)?

"The headline prime-time speaker on Wednesday will be Barack Obama's Vice Presidential Nominee."

And, Wed night is Foriegn Policy and Securing America's future, and YOU DON'T WANT WES CLARK GIVING THAT SPEECH?

I can't believe the Obama camp is that angry over the McCain/Wes tustle, it's to their advantage to have the pundits do more then fixate on "Is Obama just a Celebrity blah blah blah....)

Why wasn't Wes considered, how can you consider Bayh, so WRONG on the war, and bypass Wes altogether.

I am a staunch Obama supporter, but I guess I am completely out of synch on this one.

Right - why no Zinni ? (none / 0)

Hell, I'm amazed he wasn't on the VP list (outsider, new direction, not same old way of doing things, etc) !

Re: Right - why no Zinni ? (none / 0)

I did hear his name mentioned, along with Jones, in that "Outsider" category, but never read anything after that.

Would have been controversial, no political background to speak of...

I'm sort of shocked ONE of those guys isn't speaking, Zinni is a good speaker, never seen Jones but I think ONE of them should be on the docket Wed night?

We have folks with Miltary experience, and I like Jack Reed, but it would be nice to have some horse-power on the podium....

Re: Please Dodd!!! (none / 0)

Seriously, is this a joke?

Never did anything?

Family Medical Leave Act.  First Childcare grants since WWII.  Fire and Safer Acts.  Advocate for Publicly Financed Elections long before it was cool.  Advocate for PAYGO Rules before it was cool.  Advocate against Don't Ask, Don't Tell when it was very uncool.

The loan story isn't a story and it won't carry weight during the campaign.  It was an attempt to derail much needed housing reform legislation.  Was nice to see all the Democrats stand up and get Senator Dodd's back...oh wait, these are Democrats we are talking about and that's why its even remotely at issue.

We SHOULD expect no matter who our candidate is, the media will skewer them, regardless of what is or is not true.  We must pick a candidate like Chris Dodd who will stand up for Democratic Values and fight back.

He was there fighting against FISA when the other candidates were in Iowa.

While a candidate for the Presidential nomination, he continued to work on major legislation to help real Americans through the nation from the Infrastructure Bill (submitted the day before the bridge in MN collapsed) to Paid Family Leave to the housing bill, he didn't quit his day job.

If you look back at the positives highlighted about each of the other "VP Contenders" you will find when compiled together, it is a list of Chris Dodd's attributes.

Those that call Dodd a DC insider just don't understand Chris Dodd, he has been bucking the system and fighting for change his whole career.    As a person fortunate enough to have spent some time with Gov Richardson, Senator Biden, Senator Dodd, and several other candidates and/or their spouses, There isn't a single one I believe is as capable and qualified as Chris Dodd.  A league of his own.

Re: Convention Notes (none / 0)

Well, just read that first event w/ VP pick is Saturday.  With the tough news out of VA, I've got a hard time seeing Kaine legitimately stick, and I can't see Dodd, I really can't.  If that emerges, I'll be the first to say I'm flabbergasted.  With all the issues Richardson is facing in NM with angry legislators, including Dems, I've got a hard time seeing that.

I think it's Bayh/Biden.  Does he pick Bayh as a bridge?  Let's be honest, would Bayh really bring back any HRC folks that are angry right now?  Don't see it.  I think it's Biden, provided Biden can toe the company line before Saturday.  Of course, just watch it be Wes Clark (I'd be fine with that) ... or a darkhorse like Chuck Hagel (highly, highly doubt that).

"Of course, just watch it be Wes Clark (I'd be fine with that)...

I would be more then fine, I would be convinced the obama camp runs the tightest most disciplined ship in modern political history, cause there have been NO signs Wes was even considered.

And, my take is, NO ONE besides Hillary will make her supporters happy, so forget Bayh...

Besides, I have to say, If Obama choose Bayh, SO WRONG on the war that he buddied up with the Neocons, and bypasses Wes, for some crazed idea of placating the Hillary campaign...

Feh, I just am not going there till that text comes through.

Re: Convention Notes (2.00 / 1)

don't judge her just based on her state of union address, go youtube some of her other speeches.+ with celebrity meme and Barack being the rock star that he is we don't need to double down on exciting speakers.

think what she brings:
experience as a POPULAR (65% approval right now) 2 term governor of a red state, post partisan shtick, background on economy (Head of insurance sector of the government for 8 years + her state is fairing well in these tough times), a change message, a older white women,  supported obama at the very start, she and Obama are good friends

and all of the above is not the reason I am 100% sure she will be picked those are just the bonuses.

I honestly think the pick is already slotted for Wednesday.  Only two names left that aren't slated seem to be Dodd (don't really care for him as a VP) or Clark (somehow don't see them going this route).  Please no Kerry/Richardson.  I hope it's Bayh/Biden.

I'm pro-HRC, and I still have strong, really strong reservations about Obama, but at some point, it is what it is, and we have to make the choice between what is available.  And Obama's the pick, and barring a stunner, HRC likely isn't the VP.  If she is, I'm glad.  But if it's not, we need to move on and look at what's best for America, and rioting because HRC isn't the VP would be bad and more harmful to the left.

I'm an Irish boy, but no contest, let me live in Tuscany if I ever have to leave the PNW.

Obama/Phelps! (2.00 / 1)

Michael, that is, not Fred.  Sure, he's too young, but I'd love to see the Republicans tying themselves in knots trying to tear him down without looking like unpatriotic assholes...

Re: Convention Notes (none / 0)

On a side not, reading all the McCain rumors has me curious who he's going to go with.  Would he bold enough to go Lieberman or Ridge?  I have to think that's a smokescreen, because right now, more than anything, he needs to mobilize the base.  I still think his most lethal option, the option that packs the most punch, would be Bobby Jindal, who I think might be good enough to be a gamechanger in all this.  Surprisingly, Jindal doesn't get much pub anymore.  Someone like Sarah Palin would play as well, but I highly doubt that one.

Re: Convention Notes (none / 0)

It's gonna be Sebelius.

Here are the InTrade standings and my own advice:

1. Joe Biden 43.5 -> SELL

  1. Tim Kaine 13.1 -> SELL
  2. Kathleen Sebelius 13.0 -> BUY
  3. Evan Bayh 12.8 -> HOLD
  4. Hillary Clinton 8.1 -> HOLD
  5. Wesley Clark 6.5 -> BUY
  6. Jack Reed 5.0 -> HOLD
  7. Dick Gephardt 4.0 -> SELL
  8. John Kerry 3.5 -> SELL
  9. Al Gore 3.0 -> SELL

98% certain It's Biden... (2.00 / 0)

...for a lot of reasons that I know but simply can't state on this blog.

It is possible I'm being given the biggest head-fake of my life (from people close to me), in which case it's Clark or Clinton.

On the Rethug side, Joe Lieberman is still very much in the money IMHO...a lot of pundits could be eating a shitload of crow on this one! (But, I've been saying this for many months...check my diaries.)

Joe's been on the McCain plane a hell of a lot the past couple of weeks, too!

Then there's Ridge's comments (and those associated with the Ridge story) speaking up about how a Pro-Choice V.P. is much more possible than many realize on the Rethug side this cycle, as well.

grain of salt (none / 0)

on fox news right now (was bored), someone said Biden yelled out "I'm not it" or something like that.  Granted, it's the silly season, so could just be head fake.

Re: 98% certain It's Biden... (none / 0)

So if it's Lieberman THEN will they take away his committee chairmanship?

I'm all for bypartisanship, but is there ANY line you can cross with these guys....

What's the downside... (none / 0)

...for Lieberman after the election? IMHO, he's toast come January if he's still in the Senate, assuming the Dem's have their majority.

From his perspective, he's looking at lose-lose if he's still a senator, IMHO.

This is has last shot; he wants it bad. He just might get the spot on the ticket, too.

Still doesn't change my opinion of the ass, however.

Re: 98% certain It's Biden... (2.00 / 0)

I know of quite a few evangelicals who are only voting for McCain because of his anti-abortion stance. A pro-choice VP would be a slap in their faces.
Please let him pick a pro-choice veep. PLEASE.
